Frequently Asked Questions

What style guide do you use?

I use The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th ed. as my style guide. It is the standard style guide for book publishing.

Is there a certain dictionary you use?

I use Merriam-Webster's Unabridged Dictionary.

Are there certain books you use for reference?

I use Garner’s Modern English Usage, Garner’s The Chicago Guide to Grammar, Usage, and Punctuation, and The Copyeditor’s Handbook for reference.

How do you perform your edits?

I use Microsoft Word’s Track Changes feature for my editing process. I use the Comments feature on Microsoft Word for my queries. I will send you information on the basics of track changes and comments if you are not familiar with it, or you can find my post explaining it on my blog.

Can I email you with questions during editing?

I feel that communication between the author and editor is extremely important to the editorial process. It allows me to ensure your manuscript stays true to your vision. Please don’t hesitate to contact me during any part of the editorial process.

Can you skip editing for ________?

If there are specific things that you want me to do differently during editing, please let me know. This edit is for you and I want you to be completely satisfied with your edited manuscript. I will include it in our contract.

Will you go over the manuscript more than once?

I usually like to do two passes over each manuscript I edit. I take this into consideration when I give you a quote. If you would like only one pass, please let me know.

NOTE: the manuscript will not be as “clean” with one pass as it would be with two passes.

How long will the editing take?
It varies. I will include the turnaround time in my quote after I have edited your sample.

How do I pay?
I accept payment by Paypal. I require a 50% payment of fees at contract signing. The second 50% will be due when I return the manuscript to you. We will electronically sign our contract.

Will you publish any part of my manuscript on your website?

No. I do not publish any part of your work anywhere. This includes my website and Facebook. I want my clients to feel that their manuscripts are completely safe with me. I will also sign an NDA if asked to do so.
